Las matrices son una importante herramienta matemática con múltiples aplicaciones en diversos contextos tecnocientíficos y cotidianos. Este libro es una introducción a las matrices a través de un singular recorrido con el que se pretende mostrar sus orígenes y desarrollo a partir de las contribuciones de matemáticos de distintas épocas. Se detiene, en primer lugar, en el célebre problema matemático de los puentes de Königsberg, resuelto por Leonhard Euler en el siglo XVIII y que dio origen a la teoría de grafos, que permite a su vez enlazar el histórico paseo con una visión matemática de las actuales redes sociales y la World Wide Web. Un itinerario que continúa con algunos ejemplos del papel de las matrices en la resolución de retos para llegar a Google y la ordenación de páginas del buscador PageRank. También se muestran las matrices que hay detrás de las fotografías digitales o cómo intervienen en el cifrado y descifrado de mensajes (cifrado de Hill).
